Up for sale, a 1982 Rickenbacker 4001S vintage electric bass guitar with the original Jetglo finish and black plastic appointments. A rare vintage S-suffix iteration of the 4001 platform, this bass features an unbound neck, dot inlay, and unbound body with more ergonomic contours than the more common 4001.It's a truly distinct sound that's notably deeper and thicker than later 4003 models, and while the 4001S still has Rickenbacker's present midrange growl and note attack, the sound is wider and thumpier. Particularly resonant acoustically and able to sustain beautifully given the neck through body construction, this 4001S weighs in at 9lbs and balances well on a strap.
The bass is currently strung with 45-100 roundwound strings and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar for optimal action and intonation. The maple neck has a fairly full C profile shape with generous shoulders, measuring. 945 deep at the 1st fret and. 965 at the 12th, and the bass plays effortlessly up the 33 1/4 scale. The lacquered fretboard retains the original fretwire which show virtually no wear, and the bass plays well in all registers with ideal relief and two responsive truss rods. The nut is a new hand-carved piece of bone measuring 1 5/8 in width. On the headstock, the bass retains the original tuning machines which turn smoothly and function as intended. The Rickenbacker-branded black truss rod cover is intact, matching the Jetglo headstock face. The original wiring harness is fully intact, with stock CTS pots that date to 1981 (while the VE-prefix serial on the jack plate conclusively dates production to May of'82). The chrome hardware and plastic parts are quite clean, and the bridge is original to the bass. Cosmetic wear includes light wear down to the bare maple on the back of the bass-side body horn and a few scattered light marks and nicks on the back and body edges. The body exhibits horizontal checking in the original lacquer, with light scuffing across the guard in the pick path and one spot of light, targeted buckle rash south of where the neck meets the body wings. The neck profile is nearly flawless, with just a couple tiny nicks on the bass-side edge. A hardshell case is included.
