1970 Fender Competition Mustang Bass Vintage Electric Bass Gulf Colors with Case
Up for sale, a 1970 Fender Competition Mustang Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Sporting a light relic nitro lacquer Gulf Colors finish and matching headstock furnished by Riggio Custom Guitars, this genuine vintage Mustang Bass is unique in its appearance and rich and resonant in its tonal response. First seen on Gulf Oil Company vice president Grady Davis' own GT40 in 1967, which was raced at Daytona and Sebring, the Gulf Colors consist of Zenith Blue and Tangerine, with a dark blue pinstripe accent on the competition stripe. Delivering a round acoustic voice with smooth sustain and a touch of growl in the top end, there's a certain pluck and punch unique to this bass that's particularly appealing and sits well in a mix. A bit more aggressive and midrange forward than a P, this Mustang Bass is strung with fresh roundwound 45-100 strings, with a surprising amount of oomph when plucked with authority, and approximating a P Bass with the Tone knob rolled back to taste.
The bass is featherweight at only 6lbs 12oz and has been setup with low action and accurate intonation by our tech staff here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar. The maple neck has a medium C shaped profile with generous shoulder, lightly rolled fretboard edges, and gentle taper up the fretboard, measuring.
840 at the 1st fret and. The nitro lacquer finish on the profile features R. Iggios signature neck finish, offering a smooth gradient between nitro lacquer gloss and silky, nearly bare maple. The fretboard is a n.Ice dark cut of tight-grained rosewood with some dynamic grain patters in the higher registers and original slender fretwire. The frets are in great shape, retaining their full factory height and showing only light wear beneath the A and D strings on frets 1-5. The truss rod is responsive with the truss rod nut still flush with the neck heel. The neck is straight, and this bass plays cleanly in all positions.
The nut measures 1 916 in width, and on the headstock the bass features a matched set of original Fender-stamped tuners along with a vintage spec gold Mustang Bass logo atop the matching blue peghead. The original green ink stamp on the neck heel is also intact yet faint. The original F neck plate and control plate are intact, complete with original knobs, while the bridge is a modern Fender replacement with the correct vintage footprint. The pickguard is unique and a vintage style relic of a style seen on Fenders of this era with a pearloid back, three-ply construction, and lightly aged parchment top ply.The gloss Gulf Colors nitro lacquer finish is a pitch perfect rendition of this classic color combo, and Riggio's execution is second to none. Riggio's relic treatment includes prominent tight horizontal lacquer checking across the body, while additional simulated wear is very restrained with only a few nicks and marks on the contoured body.
