Up for sale, a 1971 Fender Precision Bass in 100% original condition and in perfect working order. An extremely well-balanced, lightweight, and dynamically responsive instrument at only 8lbs 4oz, this vintage P Bass features a three-tone Sunburst finish which has gracefully aged to a tone-tone burst on the face of the body, accented by one of the last "meatball" red nitrate tortoise pickguards of the era. As tonally lively and soulful as its appearance would lead you to believe, this bass offers plenty of pillowy, round thump.
The alder body provides a smooth and balanced-sounding tonal platform, and fresh 45-105 roundwound strings accentuate the articulation of the instrument, with a touch of smooth growl when you dig in hard with a pick, and a broad, rich tone when plucked with fingers. Dialed in here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Precision Bass features ideal action and spot-on intonation. The maple neck has a nice chunky C shape with generous shoulder and a substantial, round feel, measuring. 885" deep at the 1st fret and tapering to 1.015" at the 12th. The profile also highlights light curly maple figuring which extends more prominently to the headstock face.
The rosewood veneer fretboard is thicker than most, with lightly rolled fretboard edges and pearl dot inlay. The original medium jumbo fretwire is intact with lots of meat and crown, showing moderate uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-4, extending with fainter wear beneath the A and D strings until fret 7, with virtually no wear further up the fretboard. A new ground wire has also been run from the pots to the output jack.
The red tortoise pickguard has the dimensional speckled appearance commonly referred to as "meatball, " and this is one of the latest guards we've seen with this distinctive nitrate pattern. The guard shows virtually no shrinkage or warping, and under the guard, the finish has a subtle tan line where the central red ring of the Sunburst can still be faintly seen. The original hardware includes the pair of knurled knobs, four-bolt F neck plate, and the original bridge with long G intonation screw. Cosmetically, the bass shows wear through the Sunburst where the forearm crosses the top and on the edges of the bass side body horn, with more slender spots of wear on the top contoured body edge. The back exhibits some expected light finish scratches and scattered small nicks, yet no buckle rash. The neck profile is one of the more figured'70s Fender profiles we've encountered, retaining a smooth ambered gloss finish that feels great on the palm, with wear limited to some assorted tiny shallow nicks. An era-correct black tolex Fender hardshell case with raised logo on the exterior is included. The case features black tolex, black leather ends, the original trio of functional latches, and the stock handle.
