Up for sale, a 1997 Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4 H "EX" in 100% original condition and in good working order. The EX models are a unique and discontinued iteration of the StingRay platform, produced in conjunction with Japanese distributor Kanda Shokai. Using all USA parts and assembled in Japan, this EX StingRay was offered only in the Japanese domestic market. The enduring flagship of the Music Man line, the StingRay is the same as it was some forty years ago, featuring roadworthy construction, massive hardened steel bridge, elegant oval pickguard, 3+1 tuning key configuration, and the ever popular Music Man humbucker. Governed by an active 3-band EQ, the alnico humbucker offers a range of tones from punchy and articulate with rich growl to thick, round thump.

The bass weighs 9lbs 10oz and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 45-105 roundwound strings, comfortable action, and spot-on intonation. The maple neck has a moderately chunky C shape with a bit more shoulder and roundness as you travel up the fretboard, measuring. 865 deep at the 1st fret and. 955 at the 12th and offering the perfect balance of comfort, speed, and stability.

Finished with gunstock oil and a hand-rubbed special wax blend, the back of the StingRay's neck has a notably smooth, effortless feel. And with its six-bolt attachment, this neck delivers stability that easily surpasses most set necks. On the 11 radius fretboard, the original medium jumbo fretwire shows notable wear with some decent fairly uniform grooves beneath the strings on frets 1-7, tapering off with sparingly little wear beyond fret 9.

The instrument does play clearly in every register, the nut measures 1 5/8 in width, and the headstock retains the original chrome tuning machines which show light, uniform patina. The chrome hardware has plenty of shine, and all of the electronics work as intended, with a Master Volume knob in addition to the 3-band active EQ circuit.

Cosmetic wear includes some light finish scratches on the back but shy of buckle rash, and a some scattered small nicks on the bass as a whole, primarily around the body contours.
