The neck has more depth as you travel up the board, filling out to a substantial handful in the highest registers, yet still feeling quick and effortless to play, given the slender 1 1/2 nut width and lightly rolled fretboard edges. The dark, tight grained rosewood fretboard is a generous slab that sports dot inlay and slender, vintage-spec fretwire which is virtually flawless. The neck is straight, the truss rod is responsive, and the bass plays well in all registers. On the headstock, the vintage spec "reverse" tuning machines turn very smoothly and hold pitch well, and the Custom Shop logo is embossed into the wood on the back of the headstock. Gastelum stamp references Fender's legendary neck shaper, Herbie Gastelum, alongside a stamp for equally legendary Master Builder John Cruz. Both the neck heel and the body beneath the R-prefix neck plate have their original Relic stamps as well, and the heel is pencil dated 1-10-97. All of the electronics work flawlessly, with untouched solder and CTS pots which date to late 1996. The chrome hardware has been faintly aged as part of the relic process while still having plenty of shine. The neck profile is pristine and smooth, with no notable wear.
